How Anti-Atlas Adventures Canyoning Started

Anti-Atlas Adventures canyoning began in 2017 when a Flemish adventure agency was planning mountain biking routes in the Anti-Atlas for the first time. With extensive knowledge of canyoning, the team collaborated with local guides and discovered the dramatic canyons of Auekerda. Excited by the potential, they returned later as a group of professional canyoners to explore these gorges in depth and teach local guides advanced techniques.

To ensure the guides could continue learning and practicing safely, the Flemish team provided necessary canyoning equipment. The local guides, highly enthusiastic and quick learners, began organizing adventures for local tourists within just a few months. Their rapid progress encouraged the Flemish agency to take the project further by launching the first international canyoning meeting in Morocco, in collaboration with the local guides. This event became a major promotion for Anti-Atlas Adventures canyoning, attracting international attention and establishing Tafraoute as a prime destination for canyoning enthusiasts.

After the meeting, another professional team arrived to reinforce the canyon routes by installing bolt anchors with rappel rings and donating a significant amount of additional equipment. They also conducted a second course in canyoning techniques, with a special focus on safety protocols, ensuring that local guides could manage adventures confidently and securely.

Finally, the Association Action Solidarité Pompiers de Théoule capped off the project by providing a professional mountain rescue course, which led to the establishment of the first civil independent rescue team in the region. This rescue team has since participated in real-life emergencies, including responding to the dramatic earthquake in Morocco, cementing a legacy of safety and professionalism in the development of canyoning in the Anti-Atlas.

We spent a wonderful day with two guides, Rachid and Yassin. We descended a canyon and admired breathtaking, wild landscapes far from the usual tourist spots.
A great moment of sharing and genuine friendship. Rachid is a wonderful person, passionate about his country and its history.
So much emotion.
